It seems that M.I.A. has subconsciously creeped back into my brain over the last couple of days. See, I’m big on movie trailers and PPRLNS ryeryeAB is featured on the trailer for Pineapple Express. Now I saw this trailer a few times as it was an advertisement on Comedy Central that you can’t skip, so in the end it must have rekindled my interest in the artist.
So after a little bit of research, here is the news. First of all, M.I.A. (Mathangi Arulpragasam) is engaged to marry the guitarist and singer of NY rock band Benjamin Brewer. Mr. Brewer is the son of Warner Music Group Chairman Edgar Bronfman Jr. That kind of broke my heart, I can’t really compete with a guitarist.
Apart from that, she also cancelled her UK tour to the dismay of many of her fans here. MIA, who spent her early years in Sri Lanka and India, grew up in Southeast London and her name stands for Missing In Acton (West London). Her songs have strong social and political messages to them and she encompasses several musical styles in her music.
Now, she may have cancelled her UK tour because she said she wanted to get back in contact with people and her band, and because she wants to work on a new album, but she has announced a US tour which you can prebook tickets for. I do hope she rethinks her cancellation of the UK tour because it would be a great treat to see her live after listening to her music all these years. Her records Arular and Kala, which won her several nominations and awards, are available at HMV, CD WOW and Play.com, and you can download it from iTunes. Just a warning, seeing as Mama Mia is also out at the moment, you may have to scroll down to find what you’re looking for.
