President Barack Obama and wife are true Stevie Wonder fans. They loved his songs and Barack Obama even jokingly said that if it wasn’t for his being a Stevie Wonder fan, he may not be lucky enough to have married Michelle.
For the inspiration Stevie Wonder was given through his songs, the President and his wife honoured him by giving him the Gershwin Prize Award at the White House. The award was given to Stevie Wonder during the concert that the President himself and his wife had organized for him and they entitled the concert “Stevie Wonder in Performance at the White House: The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize”. Not a very creative title, you might say but it’s really the thought that counts.
Stevie Wonder serenaded the audience with songs such as Sir Duke and Isn’t She Lovely among many other songs he sang. It wasn’t just Stevie Wonder who entertained the couple and the audience but the concert also included Mr. Tony Bennett, Will.i.am, Paul Simon and Martina McBride.
Michelle Obama could still recall the days when she and her grandfather would listen to the radio as Stevie Wonder’s tracks are being played. She and her grandfather are such fans of this incredible musician that even for her wedding with the fellow Stevie Wonder fan, they used “You and I” as their wedding song.
Stevie Wonder thanked the president and his wife and said that Obama’s presidency is historical and he is hoping that he could bring more unity to the world.
