The Dixie Chicks have come a long way since lead vocalist Natalie Maines’ comment regarding the recently replaced US President George Bush. And now with their latest album, “Taking the Long Way”, they have shown that even with that blip in their career back in 2003, they still have what it takes to dominate the charts and sell over two million albums in the US.
“Taking the Long Way” is their first album recorded in LA and not in Nashville and where all the members of the group co-wrote most if not all of the lyrics. The result? A pleasing record which shows their skills musically and literally (through writing) which also has charming melodies and striking words.
Though it may seem that all that has happened has been set aside, once you sit back, relax and listen to the entire album you’ll definitely notice and hear that there’s still a little angst and of course pain that is infused into their songs. And although the same kind of music they have been delivering ever since they started is still felt in the album, there’s a slightly different kind of vibe that wasn’t in their previous records.
The raw emotion from their anguish has evolved the Dixie Chicks into artists and not just country pop stars since they had to suffer for what they loved, for their art. This album definitely has more than a southern twang; it has soul that will let you feel what it’s like to be in their shoes.
